Nymphenburg Palace and Park

The Nymphenburg Palace and Park are a must-see if you go to Munich. It’s about a 20 minute tram ride from the city center to get to the palace. Plan to spend at least a day there (there’s a lot to see) and wear good walking shoes. The palace is the former summer residence of the Bavarian regents.

After you’ve had a chance to look at the palace, have a wander around the magnificent grounds of the park. Be sure to check out the out-lying buildings (The Pagodenburg and the Amalienburg are my favorites).

Nymphenburg Palace and Gardens

Nympenburg Palace and Nympenburg Park are an outstanding example of baroque architecture - one of the best in Europe. You can easily go there by car and you can reach it by Tram 17 and Bus 41.
Elector Ferdinand Maria began to build it in 1664 and famous architects worked there for more than 60 years (Barelli, Zuccalli, Effner, Cuvillies). King Ludwig II., the "dream king", was born here. Today King Ludwig I's world-famous "Gallery of Beauties" is exhibited here (compare them with the beauty of modern ladies!). A walk through the extended park ( French baroque inspired by Versailles, parts of it in the beginning of the 19th century transformed into a landscape garden) is pleasant and relaxing especially from spring to autumn (leashed pets allowed). In the park there are a couple of famous Pavillons, which you should not miss (my favourite is Amalienburg, a Cuvillies masterpiece).
In the southern wing of the Palace is the Marstallmuseum (collection of coaches and sleighs, most famous: Ludwig II's Putti Sleigh) and the Nymphenburg Porcelaine Collection (1200 pieces from rococo to art deco).
In the north wing is the museum "Mensch und Natur" (man and nature), Tel: 176494, where exhibits and animations involve you in the history of our earth, in fascinating facts of biology and our environment; kids like this museum.
From the Nymphenburg Park you can slip into Munich Botanical Garden (one of the richest in Europe).
You can get info-leaflets and the exact opening hours in the Infopoint in Alter Hof in the City Center.
