A trip to Munich wouldn't be complete without a trip to the Hofbrauhaus, the city's most famous brewery. The hall is huge and was decorated for Christmas. The picture we took of our family (all holding giant beer steins) became next year's Christmas card

We were visiting Munich during the week between Christmas and New Year's in1999. As we strolled down the Marienplatz the snow began to fall in huge flakes which was magical. The carrillon was a special treat.

MARIENPLATZ ist the historic and present centerpoint of Munich. From 1158 to 1854 it was the market place ot the town; the FISCHBRUNNEN (fish fountain) is the site where the fishmongers had their stalls and WEINSTRASSE (wine street)reminds us where wine was sold.
In the very center of Marienplatz is the MARIENSÄULE (St. Mary's column). It was built there in 1638 by elector duke Maximilian I. in order to thank St. Mary because she had protected Munich during the 30 years war. On top of the 11,6 mtr column is the gold-plated statue of St. Mary, or how she is called in Bavaria "Patrona Bavariae" (protectress of Bavaria). On the corners of the marble base there are baroque style hero-putti who fight the enemies of mankind: war (lion), lack of faith (snake), plague (basilisk = cock with a dragon's tail) and hunger (dragon).
Marienplatz was - and still is - also a site for celebrating festivities. The most spelndid took place in 1568, when Duke Wilhelm V. married Renata from Lothringen. It is said that nearla 5000 knights took part and fought tournaments (GLOCKENSPIEL = the carillon high up the facade of the city hall demonstrates how a Bavarian knight throws an other knight off his horse).
Marienplatz was not only a place of trade, prayer and festivities, it was also the place of execution. In January 1706 for example 30 rebellious farmers who had fought the Austrian occupation where beheaded on Marienplatz.
On the north side (long side) of the square is the neogothic RATHAUS (city hall) and on the east side (small side) there's the old, gothic town hall (built 1470/80), the ALTE RATHAUS.
