Lothar-Günther Buchheim was an extremely versatile person: an artist, a writer (world bestsller "The boat") and a very successful collector of modern art and of funny and beautiful "schnickschnack".
A great architect (Günter Behnisch) built a remarkable museum for Buchheim's collection on the shore of Lake Starnberg (www.buchheimmuseum.de).
You can reach the museum by car (A 95 Munich-Garmisch, exit Seeshaupt) , by S-Bahn and bus (S6 from Munich to Tutzing and then bus RVO 9614) and - that's what I extremely suggest - by S-Bahn and ship (S6 from Munich to Starnberg and from there by the museum's ship or an other vessel of the Lake Starnberg fleet directly to the pier of the museum, only May 1st-16th Oct.).
The Buchheim museum is a must for all art connoiseurs (highlights of expressionism, e.G. Kirchner, Dix, Heckel, Schmidt-Rottluff) - and great fun for children an well, because Buchheim collected also toys and various stuff from all over the world and it is very entertaining to walk through these departments of the museum.
You can combine the visit of the museum with a hike along the shore of the lake, you can swim or you can just sit on the pier and look over the water to the silhouette of the near Alps.
